THE GREAT BIG MASSIVE MULTIPLAYER LIE

a time everyone believed in the existence of massively multiplayer games--realms in which millions of players, gathered on a singular vast game board, would have the ability to play together. Alas, this was but a grand illusion. The unvarnished truth is that, even among games that boasted of millions of players, the players were actually split into separate realms and players in separate realms were truly and utterly separate and could not play or interact with each other.

The Tale of Fortnite that announced with much fanfare that its Season 4 finale brought together a staggering 15 million concurrent players. In truth, Fortnite only allows a hundred players to rival each other. You might wonder, what of the reported 15 million players? Answer: they were merely spectators to "cut-scenes", shared experiences perhaps, but devoid of active gameplay. Although requiring extraordinary technical prowess in the realm of online games, the Season 4 finale largely mirrors the experience of millions watching a spectacle on a TV screen, and was not an example of millions actively participating in gameplay with one another.

holds true for casual multiplayer games. For each game, let’s unveil

any online game has ever come to gathering a multitude of players on a solitary game board exists in the legends of r/place and Curiosity: What's Inside the Cube? However, these two tales fall shy of being bestowed the rare and elusive “massively multiplayer game” crown because:

At their moment of greatest glory, r/place summoned 90,000 peak active users (many of whom may have been clandestine bots  in disguise) and Curiosity summoned 96,000 peak active users. However, although these figures may have been the stuff of legends at their time, they stand modest when compared to truly massive gatherings.

Both r/place and Curiosity were not games in the conventional sense, but rather intriguing social experiments.

The life of these “games” was but a fleeting moment in time. r/place was sparked to life on three solitary occasions, once on April Fool's day in 2007 for three days, once on April Fool's day in 2022 for a span of four days, and once on July 20, 2023 for a span of five days. Curiosity, on the other hand, had a solitary life span beginning from November 2012 only to cease to exist after 8 months.

to the vision of Stack the Pixels, a genuine massively multiplayer game, first of its kind, crafted with the intention to welcome millions of players, all playing in one vast, sprawling game board, a spectacle that has never been witnessed in the history of the world until now.

of history! Be amongst the million plus players who will etch a new world record for the greatest number of simultaneous players on a single, colossal game board!
